What is the difference between a Chamber of Commerce and a Business Improvement District?

A Chamber of Commerce is a local organization of businesses whose goal is to further the interests of businesses. Business owners in towns and cities form these local societies to advocate on behalf of the business community and in the process benefit the community as a whole. Local businesses are voluntary members, and they elect a board of directors or executive council to set policy for the Chamber. Many Chambers of Commerce permit non-profit organizations and residents to join.

A Business Improvement District (BID) is a partnership in which all businesses in a defined area are automatically members and pay an additional tax to fund improvements to the district's realm. BIDs, such as the one in Cedarhurst, are quasi-governmental entities with the authorization of the local government or municipality. BIDs often are overseen by a board of directors and the services provided by BIDs are a supplement to the services already provided by the municipality. Unlike a Chamber of Commerce, only businesses in the BID's defined area are members.

In cases where towns share a common chamber, each town is listed separately and each is directed to the shared chamber website. For example, Westbury and Carle Place share a common Chamber of Commerce, so both westbury.chamber.li and carleplace.chamber.li point to the same website.

Some business areas of Long Island are covered by a local Business Improvement District (BID) instead of a Chamber of Commerce. For consistency a BID can be found in the same manner as the Chambers. For example, the Cedarhurst Business Improvement District can be found through cedarhurst.chamber.li.

Organizations that have no particular Long Island regional affiliation are not included on this website.
